A Filipino man, believed to be the mastermind of one of the world's deadliest terrorist attacks at sea, has been deported after being arrested in Bahrain on Friday, the dpa reported.

The Gulf Daily News reported on Sunday that Ruben Omar Pestano Lavilla Junior, 35, was extradited for his alleged role in the bombing of a ferry in Manila Bay, which killed 116 people in 2004.

Around 900 people were on board the 10,192-tonne vessel, which was heading to Cagayan de Oro City, when it burst into flames and sank on February 27.

The newspaper quotes Philippine National Police as saying that Lavilla was arrested in Bahrain on July 24 after he reportedly applied for a bank loan and his name appeared on a United Nations Security Council list of suspected terrorists.
