Taliban militants have shot dead a senior female police officer in the volatile southern province of Kandahar, an official said.
Police officer Malalai Kakar was shot in her car as she left her home in Kandahar city at about 8am on Sunday, a spokesman for the provincial governor, Zalmay Ayubi, said.
Kakarїs son, who was driving the car, was injured by the militants, who fired from a nearby vehicle, Ayubi said.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi said the militant group had carried out the attack.
He said the Taliban had planned to kill the female police official for a long time.
The gunmen escaped the murder scene.
