An American soldier died as a result of a non-battle related cause in the city of Mosul, capital of Iraq's northern province of Nineveh, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

The incident occurred on Friday, the military said in a statement without providing further details about the incident, reported Xinhua.

Nineveh and its capital Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, is said to be one of the last strongholds of al-Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.

The province has been the scene of a major security crackdown by U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces, which was aimed at uprooting al-Qaida militants and other anti-U.S. insurgent groups.

About 4,204 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U. S.-led invasion in March 2003, according to media count based on Pentagon figures. Enditem
