Two persons were killed and some others seriously injured as a result of pileup of 40 cars in a highway in Maryland on Monday, said the state police, Xinhua reported.

Maryland state police told reporters that 71 injured have been taken to a Red Cross shelter in Washington County, including infants and elderly, 12 people who were seriously wounded have been hospitalized.

The tragedy took place on Interstate 70 in northwestern Maryland around noon, where the road has been covered by snow.

Police said that the preliminary investigation result showed the accident could be blamed partly for the snowy road.

Emergency aids including blankets, cots, food and water were delivered by the Red Cross to people who have to stay in the shelter to take interview with police and retrieve their cars from the pileup, it said.

Part of the highway has been temporarily closed to allow cleanup, it added.
