Director of voter registration in Taliban former stronghold Kandahar in south Afghanistan Mohammad Qahir Wasifi has claimed that the Taliban fighters had registered their names to support the next presidential elections to be held in Aug. 20 this year, a local newspaper reported Thursday.

"Numerous armed Taliban fighters not only registered their names and obtained the voting cards but also cooperated with the authorities to complete the voter registration process smoothly," the Daily Arman-e-Millie quoted Wasifi as saying, Xinhua reported.

Meantime, a Taliban spokesman Qari Yusuf Ahmadi rejected the claim, saying no Taliban fighters received voting card and nor supported the voter registration process.

Taliban elusive leader Mullah Mohammad Omar had in the past described the elections as un-Islamic and called on Afghans to boycott it.
