Chile got past a very limited and demoralized Peruvian team Sunday to climb to joint second place in the South American qualifiers towards the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, dpa reported.

Chile won 3-1 in Lima to kill off any chance of recovery for Peru, who remain last in the qualifiers.

Alexis Sanchez opened the score just two minutes into the game, while Humberto Suazo left things 2-0 from the spot in the 31st minute. Johan Fano put the home side back into the game just two minutes later, but Matias Fernandez sealed the Chilean triumph in the 69th minute.

Peruvian defender Juan Vargas was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 52nd minute.

Chile now have 19 points from 11 games, the same as Argentina, and stand four points behind regional leader Paraguay. Peru, in turn, remain last with only 7 points, ahead of their away game in Brazil Wednesday.
