5.0-Magnitude earthquake hits Los Angeles area

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit the Los Angeles area Sunday evening, with a magnitude 3.1 aftershock minutes later, seismologists at the California Institute of Technology said, Xinhua reported.
  
The moderate earthquake occurred shortly before 8:40 p.m. local time with the epicenter under a South Los Angeles suburb near the Los Angeles International Airport.
  
The earthquake lasted about 10 to 15 seconds and was felt across the Los Angeles area, witnesses said.
  
A magnitude 3.1 aftershock occurred about five minutes later in the same area, according to Caltech.
  
Police and fire department officials said they went on "earthquake emergency mode," although no damage or injuries reports were received.
