5 policemen gunned down in NW Pakistan

Unknown militants have killed at least five policemen in an ambush in the Manshera district of troubled north western Pakistan, Press TV reported.

Militants opened fire on a police vehicle in the Kandbangla area of the district killing all five policemen on the spot, a Press TV correspondent quoted city Police Chief Akhtar Hayat Khan as telling reporters on Saturday.

The militants managed to flee from the scene. Police and law enforcement agencies have cordoned off the area.

The Manshera district is only a few kilometers away from the troubled Swat valley where Pakistani troops are fighting the Taliban militants.

Meanwhile, at least 26 militants were injured during an operation in the Malam Jabba and Waliabad areas of Swat during the last 24 hours, a Press TV correspondent said according to a military statement released on Saturday.

The military claims to have intensified its operations in various areas of Swat.

In a separate search operation conducted in Dir, security forces recovered ammunition and explosives. They also claim to have destroyed a terrorist hideout in the area.
