Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is scheduled to visit Syria Tuesday and hold talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on bilateral relations and other key regional issues, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported Sunday.

Maliki will also meet with other senior Syrian officials on the cooperation between the two countries in various fields, including water, energy, trade and security, Xinhua reported.

Maliki's upcoming visit follows Iraqi Financial Minister Baker Jabr al-Zubaidi's trip to Damascus, during which he discussed with his Syrian counterpart Mohammad al-Hussein about financial, banking and customs cooperation.

Al-Assad in the past few months has publicly reiterated his country's support for Iraq's territory integrity and national reconciliation.

The two countries are planning to ink a strategic cooperation agreement as the two foreign ministers are preparing the draft and will present it to the governments as soon as possible, according to the report.

During the meetings of the Syrian-Iraqi Joint Higher Committee in April, the two sides have signed a series of agreements on trade facilitation, health and cultural cooperation and a memo of understanding on housing and construction.
