At least 55 people have been killed in central Nigeria where a truck loaded with cement bags ran over a group of people on the side of a road, police said, Presstv reported.

The truck driver lost control in the town of Dekian in central Nigerian state of Kogi and hit a crowd on Saturday.

"I can only confirm that 55 people were killed. The driver of the truck lost control and ran into a group of people moving in a procession along the road," AFP quoted an unnamed police official as saying on Sunday.

There are conflicting reports on the exact number of fatalities, with some local media putting the death toll at around 90.

Several other people have also been injured in the mishap that prompted local authorities to declare three days of mourning.

Nigeria has poor road safety records and inter-city roads accidents are common in the country.

Last week, 23 people burned to death when a bus carrying mourners to a funeral collided with a truck on a road in southwest Nigeria, AFP reported.
