Uruguay to field Forlan, Lugano in third-place tie against Germany

Striker Diego Forlan and captain Diego Lugano will line up for Uruguay in Saturday's match for third place against Germany, coach Oscar Tabarez said Friday, dpa reported.

"Yes, he'll play and he's in good shape," Tabarez said of the striker, who was substituted shortly before the end of the 3-2 semi- final defeat to the Netherlands on Tuesday.

He was able to train Friday, the coach told a press conference on the eve of the game in Port Elizabeth.

Lugano, who missed the game against the Dutch because of a thigh strain, has also recoved and is back in training.

Tabarez also named his starting line-up for the game, bringing back strike Luis Suárez and defender Jorge Fucile, who both had to sit out the last game because of suspension.

"Diego is a pillar of the team, he is the linchpin, a player who outshines everyone else," the coach said of Atletico Madrid striker Forlan.

Tabarez said he was going into Saturday evening's game full of respect for the youthful German squad, second youngest in the tournament after Ghana.

"We will be up against a strong opponent. Germany has written many memorable chapters in football history," he said. "They were my favourites to win the World Cup until they came up against Spain. But Germany remains a football power."

Tabarez said he felt "a special emotion for the match. We will go one to the pitch with all our strength in order to try and achieve third place."

The 63-year-old declined to comment about his own future, saying the main thing at the moment was the game against Germany.

"After that is over we'll talk when our football association makes me an offer. The future of football in Uruguay does not depend on me," he said.

Germany coach Joachim Loew has several doubtful players, among them striker Miroslav Klose, who is suffering from a back problem

The 32-year-old Klose is desperate to play as he needs just one more goal to equal Brazilian striker Ronaldo's 15-goal World Cup record.
