Spain detains three ETA suspects

Spanish police Wednesday detained three suspected members of the militant Basque separatist group ETA in the Basque province of Guipuzcoa, DPA reported.

The detainees included Javier Atristain Gorosabel, who was believed to head an ETA cell, and two suspected members of the cell, according to police.

The Spanish government has vowed to maintain a hard line on ETA despite the ceasefire announced by the group on September 5.

The arrests Wednesday followed those of seven suspected members of Askapena, a mouthpiece abroad of groups with links to ETA, on Tuesday.

In mid-September, police detained nine alleged members of another ETA-related organization, Ekin.

ETA, which has killed about 850 people in its four-decade campaign for a sovereign Basque state, is listed as a terrorist organization by the European Union and the United States.
