Communist rebels capture soldier in southern Philippines

Communist rebels on Tuesday captured a soldier en route to hospital in the southern Philippines, a regional military spokesman said.

   Corporal Daem Hadjaie was taken prisoner in Monkayo town in Compostela Valley province, 915 kilometres south of Manila, Lieutenant Colonel Medel Aguilar said, dpa reported.

   Aquilar said the soldier was going to Camp Panacan Station

Hospital in Monkayo to seek treatment for abdominal pain when the rebels seized him.

   Communist rebels have been fighting the Philippine government since the late 1960s making the movement one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia.
