Lindsay Lohan could be headed back to jail. According to police the troubled actress committed battery last month in a scuffle with an employee of the Betty Ford rehab centre and the case will be handed over to local prosecutors for review, People magazine reported Tuesday.

"The investigation determined Ms Lohan violated several aspects of her probation, including the battery [charge]," the Palm Desert Police Department said, dpa reported.

The case stems from a fracas that occurred on December 12 when Lohan was confronted by a Betty Ford employee after her return from a bar. Lohan reportedly refused to take a breathalyzer test, threw a phone at the employee and yanked another phone from her hand, spraining the worker's wrist.

The employee, Dawn Holland, was sacked after speaking publicly about the incident, but has since reversed her stand and said she will not cooperate with police.

Lohan is on probation for drink driving incidents and has been warned that any violation of the terms of her release would automatically result in a minimum of six months in jail.
