US backs proposal at UN to condemn Syrian regime

The United States backs a proposed resolution at the UN Security Council condemning Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime for the violent crackdown on protesters, the State Department said Wednesday, dpa reported.

"We believe that such a resolution will bring added pressure on Assad's regime and advance the international community's efforts to end the brutal repressions on the Syrian people," spokesman Mark Toner said.

The US has already condemned al-Assad government for months of violence in the country against the demonstrations, and has enacted sanctions on senior Syrian officials, including al-Assad.

Britain and France are circulating the resolution at the Security Council in New York, but have encountered resistance from China and Russia, who could use their veto power to quash a resolution.
