Karzai: decade of support needed to secure Afghan progress

Afghan President Hamid Karzai called Monday on the international community to support Afghanistan for a further decade, to secure the gains made in the country over the last 10 years, DPA reported.

"To make our success certain and our progress irreversible we will need your steadfast support for at least another decade," Karzai told delegates from 85 countries at an Afghanistan conference in the former German capital, Bonn.

At the same time, he pledged that Afghanistan would work to fight corruption more effectively and further reform government institutions, strengthen the rule of law and make the election process more accountable.

He warned however that more had to be done to ensure security in Afghanistan and beyond.

"The wider regional dimensions of the terrorist threat have been neglected and the problem of sanctuaries outside Afghanistan has remained unaddressed," Karzai warned.
