Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday was on his way back to home from Dubai, where he underwent medical treatment for nearly two weeks, his spokesman said.

"President's plane has left Dubai airport and it is expected to land in Karachi in half an hour," said presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babar.

Zardari's sudden flight to Dubai on December 6 sparked rumours he might be considering stepping down, possibly under pressure from the military, dpa reported.

The departure coincided with a scandal involving his former ambassador to the United States, who allegedly wrote a letter, on the president's behalf, requesting Washington's help reining in the Pakistani military following the killing of Osama bin Laden on May 2.

Pakistan's Supreme Court is hearing a petition filed by the main opposition leader and two-time former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who has requested the court to investigate the "memogate scandal."

Zardari, 56, was released from an American hospital in Dubai on Wednesday and has been resting at his residence there since then.
