Landslides and heavy rain have claimed 27 lives in Northeast state of Sikkim, and six of Assam in the past two days, Indian local media TIMES NOW reported on Monday.

Officials say 21 bodies including those of border Police and the Border Roads Organization (BRO) personnel have been recovered in Sikkim. The other victims were laborers, Xinhua reported.

The Northern part of Sikkim is cut off from the rest of the country. Nine landslides have blocked the main road between Chungthang and Mangan. National Highway 31-A is also blocked.

The BRO says it could take a month to restore connectivity. Meanwhile, the Army and IAF personnel have launched rescue operations.

Meanwhile, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has assured Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Nabam Tuki that the center would soon send a team to take stock of the damage caused by floods in the state.

Gandhi, during a meeting with the chief minister Sunday, said the center was aware of the worsening flood situation in Arunachal and assured all possible help to repair damage caused by sudden floods.
