The United Nations "has let the world down" on Syria, and Russia and China are to blame for that, UK Prime Minister David Cameron said, RIA Novosti reported.

"I'm afraid the United Nations has let the world down. And that is really because two of the permanent members - China and Russia - have not been prepared to see a really strong resolution that condemns what al-Assad has done to his own people and that supports proper political transition in Syria," Cameron said during his visit to the United Arab Emirates.

He also said that Bashar al-Assad "has to go."

"Like-minded countries like our two countries (the UK and the UAE) should go on working together to try to see what more can we do to help the Syrian people throw off this brutal dictator who's murdering so many," he told students at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi.

The Syrian conflict has claimed more than 20,000 lives according to estimates by various sources. The West is pushing for President Bashar al-Assad's ouster while Russia and China are trying to prevent outside interference in Syria, saying that the Assad regime and the opposition are both to blame for the bloodshed.
