A suicide car bombing at a police station in Pakistan's restive north-west early Wednesday killed three people and wounded 26 others, an official said, dpa reported.

The attacker rammed his vehicle laden with about 600 kilogrammes of explosive into the perimeter wall of Domail police station on the outskirts of Bannu district, which borders the tribal territory where the Taliban are active, local police officer Marjan Khan told dpa.

A portion of the police compound and several adjacent houses collapsed from the explosion, which left a crater two metres deep.

"One policeman and two (civilian) women died in the blast, and 26 other people, including seven policemen, sustained injuries," Khan said.

No one claimed responsibility, but there had been recent warnings of an insurgent attack, he said.

Bannu is 10 kilometres from the border of North Waziristan tribal district, where many al-Qaeda and Taliban-linked militants are based and from where they frequently launch attacks on the military and other government targets.
