A Turkish court on Saturday remanded in custody Abdulgadir Masharipov, the main suspect in an Istanbul night club attack that claimed 39 lives on New Year's Eve, according to a judicial source, Anadolu reported.

Masharipov, the prime suspect in the deadly attack, was detained in Esenyurt district of the city on Jan. 16 and brought to Istanbul Caglayan Courthouse on Saturday, the source said speaking on condition of anonymity due to restrictions over speaking to the media.

Masharipov is charged with being a member of an armed terrorist group, intentional killing, attempting to remove constitutional order, and possession of heavy weapons.

In the early hours of Jan. 1, at least 39 people were killed -- and more than 70 others injured -- when a gunman opened fire in a crowded nightclub in Istanbul’s Ortakoy district.
