Iran targets 25 billion KWh of electricity export per year

Iran plans to export over 25 billion kilowatt hours (a unit for measuring energy) of electricity per year by 2021.

The country's annual electricity export will reach 25 billion kilowatt hours based on the sixth five-year national development plan which will be implemented from 2016 to 2021, Arash Kordi, the managing director of Iran Power Generation and Transmission Company (TAVANIR) said, the official IRIB news agency reported.

The Islamic Republic exports electricity to the neighboring countries and has the capacity to become an electricity hub in the region," he added.

Iran exported $1 billion worth of electricity during the last fiscal year (ended on March 21), according to the country's energy minister, Hamid Chitchian.

During the last fiscal year, Iran decreased electricity export by 14 percent to a 9.95 billion kWh, while its electricity import increased by 2 percent to 3.769 billion kWh.

Tehran is currently trading electricity with Armenia, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Iraq and Afghanistan.

During the last fiscal year Iran added 2.87GW to its power generation capacity, while for the current year, production growth of some 2.5GW of power is expected.
