Iran says it is preparing to cut gas flaring by 2017, Fars News Agency quoted the Director of South Pars Gas Complex Massoud Hassani on Apr.27.

Currently, Iran's gas flaring amount stands at about 14.6 billion cubic meters per annum (bcm/a).

According to a report released by the World Bank, the total global flaring of gas is about 140 bcm/a, while Iran stands in third place after Russia and Nigeria in term of the amount.

The WB says that the global gas flaring causes more than 300 million tons of CO2 to be emitted to the atmosphere.

Regarding Iran's 202 bcm/a of enriched gas production level, above 0.7 percent of the country's total gas production is wasted because of flaring. This volume is more than the country's total gas export ,which stood at 9.7 bcm/a last fiscal year (ended on March 20).

However, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Iran flares about 6.2 tcf/a (equals to 17.5 bcm/a).

Iran recently announced tender to halve the amount of gas flaring to 7 bcm/a.
