The Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Tajikistan (TAT) railway, which is under construction, is intended to stimulate trade ties between countries of the region, the Turkmen government said in a message.

The first phase of the project envisages construction of two railway sections: a 85-kilometer Atamyrat-Imamnazar line in Turkmenistan and a 38-kilometer line from Imamnazar to the Andkhoy village in Afghanistan.

“At present, the railway line has been laid till the Imamnazar station,” said the message. “In parallel, work is underway on laying power lines, construction of infrastructure facilities at the Gulistan and Imamnazar stations, construction of two major railway bridges at this track.”

This railway section is of great importance and considering development of the eastern region of Turkmenistan, where the largest industrial center is currently being formed, another industrial giant is being built – a mining and processing complex for the production of potash fertilizers.

“Implementation of a number of joint infrastructure projects in Afghanistan will give a powerful impetus to further development of the Afghan economy, contribute to settlement of important social issues, ensuring employment of the population,” the Turkmen state news service reported.
