Iranian deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs, has set off for the Egyptian capital, Cairo, for talks over regional and international issues, including the ongoing crisis in Syria, Press TV reports.

In his one-day visit, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will meet with the UN-Arab League Special Envoy to Syria Lakhdar Brahimi.

During his talks with Brahimi, the Iranian diplomat is to reaffirm the Islamic Republic's support for a political solution to the violence that broke out in Syria in March 2011.

Iran severed diplomatic ties with Egypt following the Islamic Revolution of 1979 after Egypt signed the Camp David Accord with the Israeli regime.

Relations between Tehran and Cairo began to thaw after the election of President Mohamed Morsi in Egypt.
