Turkmenistan, Ashgabat, June 11 / Trend G. Hasanov /

NATO delegation arrived in Ashgabat to discuss safe transportation and keeping of radioactive waste, national TV channel Altin Asir said on June 11.

It should be noted that military doctrine was approved in Turkmenistan. Its task remained unchanged within last years - defense sufficiency, policy of positive neutrality and refusal from participation in military-political blocs. Cooperation with NATO is held within long-term program Partnership for the sake of peace. This program calls for assisting the country to solve problems on environment and people's health protection.

Turkmenistan has extensive border with Afghanistan. Official Ashgabat flatly refused to give transportation corridor for military-strategic freights, except for humanitarian freights during military operation of NATO against Taliban movement.

Today local television said that Turkmenistan as dynamically developing state had to face such problems accompanying economic and industrial growth. "Though the country does not have its own production based on use of radioactive substances, their elements can be kept in used equipment."

NATO delegation includes expert on radioactive waste Jan Luis Tisson and head of NATO program project Science for the sake of peace and security Cristian De Vispelar. Several meetings are planned to be held in the ministry of defence, the ministry of nature protection, as well as state concern Turkmenchemistry.

Turkmen television said that special equipment was received for several industrial enterprises of Turkmenistan under technical and consultative support of NATO specialists. Turkmen specialists were trained.

Major directions of partnership, including aid in control, monitoring and transportation of radioactive waste by full observation of requirements of ecological security in this sphere are being coordinated during this action.
