Chairman of the Azerbaijani State Committee for Family, Women and Children Affairs Hijran Huseynova believes several families force their children to wear the hijab.

"We have built a secular state and the secular state has its own laws. We, as a state committee, approach this issue only in terms of protecting children's rights. Our studies revealed that most of these children are forced to wear the hijab. Preteens do not understand why they must wear a hijab. Let them decide when they reach 18," Huseynova said.

She said hijab supporters say wearing the hijab is an Azerbaijani custom.

"It is a lie. We have never had such customs and traditions. I do not support this propaganda. This violates the rights of children and hinders their development," Huseynova said.
