Iran will not come to the Geneva 2 peace conference on Syria in the case of preconditions for its participation, RIA Novosti reported citing a statement by Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

"The Islamic Republic if invited to the conference, as well as other participants will take part in the event. But Iran will not participate if preconditions for participation are put forward against it. Out of a sense of dignity and honour for our country, we do not accept any preconditions for our participation," Zarif said after talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.
At the same time, the foreign minister stressed that Iran accepted the outcome of the first negotiations in Geneva in 2012, including those regarding the political settlement of the crisis in Syria.

"After the first Geneva conference, the Islamic Republic welcomed the agreements reached during this conference, and especially the political solution to the problem," the foreign minister said.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that Iran can play an important role in resolving the Syrian crisis, but only as an informal participant at the Geneva 2 peace conference to be held in Montreux on January 22. Kerry explained it by the fact that Iran has not accepted the agreements reached at the Geneva-1 in 2012.
