A series of attacks Monday in central and northern Iraq killed 39 people and injured 52, police said, dpa reported.

Twelve civilians were killed and 23 injured when a bomb exploded in a market in Tikrit, 170 kilometres north of Baghdad.

In Mosul, 400 kilometres north of Baghdad, three provincial government employees were killed and a fourth injured when gunmen opened fire on them.

Gunmen in the city also fired on a car carrying off-duty police officers, killing all four, while three policemen were killed and one injured in an attack on a checkpoint. A local mayor was killed in another attack.

A series of attacks in Baqouba, 57 kilometres north of Baghdad, killed 12 people and wounded 20.

In Kirkuk, 250 kilometres north of Baghdad, two suicide bombers wearing military uniforms blew themselves up in a police station, killing four police and injuring seven.

According to UN estimates, 979 people were killed in Iraq in October.

This year has seen the country's highest monthly death tolls since 2008 amid sectarian tensions and continuing violent campaigns by the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant and by gunmen linked to the former ruling Baath Party.
