The Arab League Saturday rejected a key element of a US security proposal for a Middle East peace deal that would entail keeping Israeli troops stationed in the Jordan Valley, dpa reported.
Arab League foreign ministers met in Cairo, where they gave full backing to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' position in the ongoing talks, league Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi said.
US Secretary of State John Kerry, who has been shuttling between Israel and the Palestinians on a regular basis for months, made the security proposal as part of the talks, but its full details have been kept under wraps.
The league supported the Palestinians' strong opposition to the proposed stationing of Israeli soldiers along a Palestinian state's border with Jordan, which is along the West Bank's eastern border.
At the meeting, which took place at the request of Abbas, the league also supported the Palestinians' call for an end to Israeli settlement plans. Abbas was present at the gathering.
After years of standoff, Israel and the Palestinians resumed peace efforts under Kerry's initiative.
