Four people, including two assailants, were killed Saturday when security forces in southern Afghanistan repelled an attack on the Kandahar governor's office, officials said.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on Governor Tooryalai Wesa, who was in his office at the time. Wesa told dpa he was unharmed, DPA reported.
His spokesman Zulmai Ayobi said two suicide bombers and two bodyguards of the governor were killed in the gun battle that ensued after the men entered the building wearing vests laden with explosives.
The insurgents were killed before they could detonate the explosives, Ayobi said.
A security official said one Afghan police officer and one foreign soldier were wounded. There was no immediate confirmation from the NATO-led coalition.
The official said two car bombs were also discovered and defused by Afghan security forces in front of the building. It was not clear how the attackers entered the highly fortified office in the volatile southern province.
Meanwhile, 10 Afghan police officers were killed by a roadside bomb that struck their vehicle, a government spokesman said Saturday.
The attack took place Friday evening in the Chak district of Maidan Wardak province, when the policemen were returning to district headquarters after an official ceremony, Shahidullah Shahid, the provincial governor, told dpa.
