Two passenger trains collided Saturday head-on near Amsterdam's Sloterdijk station, injuring 56 people and shutting down traffic between Amsterdam's central station and Schipol airport, dpa reported.
At least 13 people were in "very serious" condition, a spokesman for the fire and rescue team said. Train authorities said most of the wounds were broken bones and bruises.
Dutch railway authorities said that an express train and a two-decker regional train collided not far from the station. The cause of the accident was not known.
Initial reports varied on the number of injured, from 33 to 48.
Neither of the trains had tipped over, and both looked relatively undamaged, according to photos in the newspaper Volkskrant. The Dutch website AT5 showed live images of the express train and a local train having collided, and ongoing rescue operations, with the injured seen being pulled out of the trains and being taken away on stretchers.
De Telegraf reported that all trains between Amsterdam's central station and Schipol airport had been suspended.
