Tbilisi, Georgia, May 26
By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:
Georgia marks the Day of Independence today, on May 26.
Georgia's Tbilisi National Council adopted an act of state independence on May 26, 1918 and declared the country an independent republic. The leading European countries later recognized the independence of the Republic of Georgia.
"From now on, the Georgian people have the right of sovereignty and Georgia is a fully independent state," the first paragraph of the Act on State Independence of Georgia says.
The independent Georgian Republic existed only three years. The country succeeded to restore its independence after 70 years, on April 9, 1991.
In connection with the 96th anniversary of the declaration of Georgia's independence, May 26 was declared a public holiday. Celebrations will be held in some 12 cities of the country on this day.
