The 2014 Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to the French writer Patrick Modiano, the Permanent Secretary of the Swedish Academy Peter Englund said, Ria Novosti news agency reported Oct. 9.

The Swedish Academy is a royal academy of Sweden, responsible for making decisions on who will be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Prize in Literature is one of the five prizes bequeathed in late 19th century by the Swedish industrialist and inventor, Alfred Nobel.

The award ceremony traditionally takes place in Stockholm on December 10, on the day of Nobel's death.

The Swedish Academy was founded in 1786 by King Gustav III, modelled after the Academie francaise (French Academy) to support and develop the Swedish language and literature.

The academy has 18 lifetime members elected by voting of its permanent members.

The week of announcement of the Nobel laureates will continue on Oct. 11 by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which will present the holder or holders of the Nobel Peace Prize.
