Conflicts in S.Caucasus negatively affect Turkey – PM

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov.22
By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Conflicts in the South Caucasus have negative impact on Turkey, TRT Haber TV channel quoted Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu as saying on Nov.22.

He made the remarks at the energy summit in Istanbul, Turkey.

Davutoglu said Turkey has always stood for the resolution of conflicts in South Caucasus, including in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Turkish prime minister said that notwithstanding the conflicts in the region, Azerbaijan has achieved great success in the spheres of economy and energy.

"Turkey and Georgia also benefited from Azerbaijan's success, while Armenia stood aside from that as it has occupied Azerbaijani territories," Davutoglu said.

Turkish prime minister urged Armenia to immediately withdraw its forces from Azerbaijan's occupied territories.

Aside from the South Caucasus, the neighboring countries also face conflicts and Turkey stands for stability in the region, the prime minister said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
