BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 11. The US highly appreciates Azerbaijan's leadership at COP29, the Senior Advisor to the US President for Clean Energy Innovation and Implementation John Podesta said at a briefing in Baku today, Trend reports.

"I'm glad to be here in Baku for Pre-COP. The US values Azerbaijan's leadership. President Ilham Aliyev has appointed a strong team led by Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Mukhtar Babayev and Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev. We have aligned our priorities since Azerbaijan agreed to host COP29 just under a year ago," he mentioned.

Podesta noted that he also met with President Ilham Aliyev to discuss several issues, including preparations for a successful outcome at COP29 and ongoing efforts to reach a durable and just peace agreement with Armenia.

"The climate impacts we are witnessing worldwide clearly show that we need to do more to strengthen our actions, both in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and in preparing and accelerating our investments in resilience and adaptation," he added.

The preliminary meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), i.e., Pre-COP29, which precedes the climate summit itself, went under the motto “Enhance Ambition and Enable Action” in Baku today.

This November, Azerbaijan will host COP29. This decision was made at the COP28 plenary meeting held in Dubai on December 11 last year. Baku will become the center of the world and will receive about 70–80,000 foreign guests.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system. COP—the Conference of the Parties—is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change. There are 198 countries that are parties to the Convention. Unless the parties agree otherwise, the COP is held annually. The first COP event took place in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
