Nagorno-Karabakh belongs to Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan's occupied territories must be returned to the country, said Ayatollah Mohsen Mojtahed Shabestari, representative of Iran's Supreme Leader.

He made the remarks during the meeting with Chairman of Azerbaijan's State Committee for Work with Religious Organizations Mubariz Gurbanli, said the committee's press service May 24.

Shabestari said that there is discrimination towards Muslims in the whole world.

He also emphasized the need for Islamic solidarity.

Shabestari noted that the right work with young people can prevent their involvement in radical groups.

The representative of Iran's Supreme Leader also praised the restoration of mosques, maintenance of religious values in Azerbaijan.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
