Ruling Azerbaijani Party Not to Establish Bloc for Its Candidate
Azerbaijan, Baku, 15 July/ Trend , corr E. Babayev/ The ruling party of Azerbaijan does not plan to establish a bloc for its candidate. "New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) possesses very large resources and we will be able to conduct our election campaign successfully," Ali Ahmadov, deputy chairman and executive secretary of NAP said to Trend on 15 July.
The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on 15 October 2008. The chairman of the Musavat party Isa Gambar, chairman of Azerbaijan Democratic Party Sardar Jalaloglu, chairman of the Green Party Mais Gulaliyev and chairman of the public forum For Azerbaijan Eldar Namazov have decided to participate in the presidential elections. The political expert Eldar Namazov stated that he would run for presidency independently.
Governing New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) is going nominate country's current President Ilham Aliyev. The pro-government Ana Vatan and Social Prosperity Parties resolved to support the current President Ilham Aliyev in the presidential elections.
The Azadlig bloc, which unites three opposition parties -Popular Front party, Citizen and Development party and Liberal party, will boycott the presidential elections.
According to Ajmadov, the support of Ilham Aliyev by the public organizations and former opposition parties shows that the majority of the population also supports the candidate from the ruling party. "The current President is supported by the overwhelming majority of the population. As to the coordination of activities of the organizations supporting nomination of Ilham Aliyev, I think that NAP has sufficient resources. Our party has enough resources and we will be able to carry out election campaign of our party successfully. NAP is grateful to the organizations supporting Ilham Aliyev. They will have their say during election campaign and voting and they will vote for our candidate as a great majority of the Azerbaijani people," Ahmadov said.
NAP was established by the chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Heydar Aliyev in 1992. The current President Ilham Aliyev is the chairman of the Party which has been ruling for already 15 years.
