Georgia established an inter-departmental commission to promote democratic development in the country. Punishment Execution, Probation and Legal Aid Minister Dimitry Shashkin was appointed head of the commission. Prime Minister Nika Gilauri presented Shashkin to journalists on Feb. 12.
"This morning I signed an order to establish the commission and appoint its head. I think the agency will be a good tool for developing democracy," Gilauri said. Shashkin said Georgia "needs more democracy."
"We need strong democratic institutions. That is why we are setting up this commission," he said. Shashkin called upon parliamentary, extra-parliamentary opposition and NGOs to cooperate with the commission.
"We will do our utmost to continue democratization," he said.
