Azerbaijani Anti-Torture Committee to Appeal to International Committees

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. К.Zarbaliyeva / The Azerbaijani Anti-Torture Committee plans to appeal to international organizations to consider the cases involving certain prisoners, Elchin Behbudov, Committee's chairman said.

The monitoring was held in Prison 1 on 21 November. The human rights activist met with the former police chief, Mushvig Madatov, as well as national hero Rasim Akparov, chairman of the Yeni Fikir (New Opinion) youth movement, Ruslan Bashirli and Amiraslan Iskandarov sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment

Iskandarov complained of intense chest pains, The chief of the prison said that Iskandarov would be transported to the medical centre. Bashirli complained of a headache which resulted from the torture he endured. Akparov also has serious health problems and Madatov is diabetic.

The prisoners, however, did not complain of the conditions in the prison.

Behbudov has repeatedly appealed to the Presidential Administration on behalf of the prisoners but has received no response. He is now planning to appeal to international organizations.
