Police and fans managed to keep the
atmosphere calm and victory parties peaceful as small scuffles broke out at the
Euro quarter-final won by Turkey against Croatia in Vienna, police said early
Saturday.
During the game, minor skirmishes in the fan zone were quickly broken up
by police, and fans also helped to calm down aggressive spectators, Vienna
police spokesperson Walter Hladik said.
After the final penalty kick that brought Turkey to the semi- finals, police
quickly separated Turkey and Croatia fans, many of them immigrants living in
the same districts in western Vienna.
A few disappointed Croatia fans started damaging cars by throwing bottles, but
police quickly intervened.
Among the roughly 100,000 fans watching the game in the
stadium and in the city, there were 11 arrests and 10 slight injuries, Hladik
said, according to dpa.
