Azerbaijan will have stable seismic state in 2009: Director General of Republican Seismic Service Centre

Azerbaijan will experience stable seismic state in 2009, Director General of the Republican Seismic Service Centre of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Gurban Yetirmishli told Trend on Jan. 21.

"We registered 4 or five tremors within the first 20 days of January in 2009 and it is not regarded as dangerous case," Yetirmishli said.

A seismic norm was at a background level in 2008 compared to 2007, he said.

Only 14 earthquakes amongst tremors in 2008 were registered as felt earth tremors. Tremor of 5 magnitudes Richter scale which was the severest one in 2007 took place in 17 kilometers north-western of Pirgulu on Dec. 19.

Earthquake was felt at 4.5 magnitudes in Pirgulu settlement, 4.5 magnitudes in Damirchi settlement, 4.5 magnitudes in Shamakhi region and 3.5 magnitudes in Ismayilli region. This earthquake cased clefts at ancient buildings and no casualties were reported.

The last earthquake causing human loss took place at 6 magnitudes Richter scale in Azerbaijan on Nov. 25 in 2000.
