Azerbaijani citizens returning from their pilgrimage to Mecca will be checked at Azerbaijani checkpoints to prevent the swine flu from entering the country, the Health Ministry said today.

"No special measures will be taken while checking the pilgrims. Every citizen will be checked at the border, along with other people visiting Azerbaijan," the ministry said.

Azerbaijani pilgrims who visited Mecca to make the hajj are returning home this week. They have already left the city in the direction of Syria, Caucasus Muslims Department representative Hamdullah Babayev said over the phone earlier.

The hajj began Nov. 25. Over 2.5 million pilgrims arrived in Saudi Arabia from across the world. Roughly 2,000 Azerbaijani pilgrims went to the hajj in 2009.

Fourteen incidents of the A/H1N1 have been found in Azerbaijan. The infected have fully recovered.
