U.N. General Assembly recognizes March 21 as International Day of Novruz

The U.N. General Assembly adopted a resolution on the International Day of Novruz Feb. 23, the Azerbaijani Permanent Mission to the U.N. reported.

"Previously, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry developed a draft resolution and submitted it to the Azerbaijani Permanent Mission to the U.N. for further harmonization with other countries and ensuring its adoption at the U.N. for recognition of the Novruz holiday as the International Day of Novruz. The Azerbaijani mission has organized a series of meetings to this end," the source said.

Azerbaijani Permanent Representative to the U.N. Agshin Mehdiyev presented a draft resolution titled "International Day of Novruz" Feb. 23. The draft was initiated by Azerbaijan and prepared in collaboration with Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Albania, India and Macedonia under the forty-ninth paragraph of the sixty-fourth session of the U.N. General Assembly.

Mehdiyev stressed the importance of recognizing the Novruz holiday March 21 as an international day for promoting solidarity and peaceful neighborhood policies
