Azerbaijani ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova issued a statement on the 21st anniversary of January 20 tragedy, Ombudsman Office's press service reported.

The statement has been sent to UN Secretary General, Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, OSCE, the Council of Europe, Institute of International and European Ombudsmen and other organizations, Asian Ombudsman Association, International Peace Bureau, Universal Peace Federation, human rights commissioners of various countries, Azerbaijani embassies abroad, foreign embassies in Azerbaijan and Diaspora organizations.

The statement says that 25 years had passed from the bloody night which was tangled as January 20 tragedy: "this tragedy which was one of the bloodiest terror acts in the 20th century is the action against humanism, mankind. This incident which was one of the most tragic against our nation was scrapped in our nation's memory, and was written to our history as a proud day.

The statement informs about the savagery by Soviet army against Azerbaijani people and notes that this tragedy was the beginning of the organized terrorist policy towards Azerbaijani people, was one of the heaviest blows to the series of terrorist acts.
