YARAT! Contemporary Art Space on Friday presented a new "COMMONIST" project devoted to multiculturalism in Baku.

The event was attended by the First Lady of Azerbaijan, President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva, the Vice-President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva, the rector of the Baku branch of Moscow State Lomonosov University, artistic director of UNS creative scene, professor Nargiz Pashayeva, founder of YARAT! Aida Makhmudova, famous artists, etc.

In her opening speech Aida Mahmudova noted that the exhibition is devoted to one year from the date of establishment of YARAT!, which is promoting and developing modern art in Azerbaijan.

"This year we have made great strides in the development of modern art in Azerbaijan. Express my gratitude to all those who took part in this. Great future is waiting the contemporary art in Azerbaijan," - said Aida Makhmudova.

"I congratulate the YARAT! on the holiday and I wish you continued success. Works presented in the exhibition reflect the views of the modern artists, a kind of visions of the world that are looking for its aesthetics, to express their feelings and at the same time to show it to people", - Nargiz Pashayeva told reporters .

Mehriban Aliyeva visited the exhibition, which included works by contemporary artists.

The exhibition feature works by 19 artists, which have completely different views on this exciting theme. Project participants are Afat Bahirova, Aida Mahmudova, Ali Hasanov, Jemma Sattar, Faiq Ahmad, Fahriyaa Mammadova, Farid Rasulov, Ilkin Huseynov, Leyla Aliyeva, Mahmud Rustamov, Mammad Rashidov, Niyaz Najafov, Orhan Huseynov, Parviz Jafarov, Rashad Babayev, Rashad Babayev, Sitara Ibrahimova, Tarlan Gorchu and Vusal Rahim.

Multiculturalism, as a new and rapidly growing phenomenon, is extremely controversial - from outright rejection of anxiety and aggressive to timid hope.

The name of "COMMONIST" project appeals to the universal sense, broader than any political meaning. "COMMONIST" is a citizen of the world, forced to put up with the changed rules of human coexistence, rather than a citizen adhering to the left or right views. In its judgment, it is guided by values common to all of mankind.

There are tens of hundreds of definitions of multiculturalism, the authors of which are politicians, sociologists, philosophers and writers. YARAT! Contemporary Art Space offers artistic interpretation and ambiguous phenomenon that has affected everyone. Each of the authors has proposed his own definition of multiculturalism - sometimes positive, sometimes negative, but in most cases with a huge question mark.

Founded in 2011 by Aida Mahmudova, YARAT! is a non-commercial, private organisation dedicated to the promotion and nurturing of Azeri Contemporary art nationally and internationally.

The exhibition will run until October 22. Venue - Yusif Vezir Chemenzaminli, 132.
