Ex-Chief of Presidential Administration Sentenced to a 6-Year Imprisonment

By the decision of the Azerbaijan Court for Serious Crimes, Akif Muradverdiyev, Ex-Chief of the Presidential Administration of Azerbaijan, who was arrested on an accusation of an attempt to perform a coup in October 2005, has been sentenced to a six-year imprisonment today (October 31), the Court told Trend.

Excepting accusations concerning an attempt on performing a coup in the country, he is accused of the following Articles: 179.3.2 (Misappropriation and Embezzlement), 308.2 (Exceeding the commissions), 311 (Bribetaking), and 312 Bribing) of the Criminal Code of the Country. At present, he has stood on al the accusations, excepting the participation in an attempt to perform a coup. The prosecutor insisted on sentencing the accused to a seven-year imprisonment.

Regarding an issue on accusing on an attempt to performing a coup, it is being investigated within the joint criminal case. In October, 2005, the law enforcement bodies discovered a plot with the aim to overthrow the Government. In this connection, a number of top officials of the country, including the Ex-Economic Development Minister Farkhad Akliyev, Ex-Health Minister Ali Insanov, etc. were arrested. At present, the National Security Ministry is still continuing to investigate this case.
