Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr.S.Ilhamgizi / Unemployment (95%) among Azerbaijanis residing in Georgia continues to remain unsolved, Dashgin Gulmammadov, the President of the National Assembly of Georgian Azerbaijanis, said on 5 September.
About 250,000 employment vacancies were available in the agricultural, industrial, and trade sectors in the Borchali region of Georgia by 1991. Presently, the figure is down to 5,000, providing employment to a 9% Azerbaijani and 91% Georgian workforce.
Presently 220,000 Azerbaijanis are unable to obtain permanent work in Borchali, and it has been this way since 1993.
Agricultural and agro-industrial enterprises were liquidated in 1994. Joblessness is on the rise due to some political changes in the country.
Georgian Azerbaijanis are migrating to Azerbaijan, Russia, and Turkey as a means to deal with the land and agricultural stagnation in the Azerbaijani-populated regions of Georgia.
Official resources report that about 248,000 Azerbaijani reside in Georgia, but including non-officials, the number is 500,000.
