Azerbaijan records increase in local payments of foreigners via bank cards

Foreign citizens in Azerbaijan spent 124.3 million manats ($7.1 million) through bank cards in September 2021, which is almost five times more than the same period last year (25.6 million manats / $15 million), Trend reports citing the "Export Review" of the Center for Analysis of Economic Reforms and Communications of Azerbaijan.

According to the review, foreigners spent 836.5 million manats ($492 million) in Azerbaijan through bank cards in 9M2021, which is 2.36 times more than in the same period of 2020.

It is noted that last year, foreign citizens spent 430.2 million manats ($253.1 million) via bank cards in Azerbaijan, which is 65.7 percent less than in 2019.

According to the Central Bank of Azerbaijan, the number of bank cards in circulation in Azerbaijan amounted to 10.4 million in 1H2021. At the same time, the number of contactless cards amounted to 5.4 million, or 51.9 percent of their total number. The number of bank cards increased by 16 percent, or 1.77 million, compared to 1H2020.

In addition, the volume of non-cash payments in 1H2021 amounted to 4.5 billion manats ($2.7 billion), which is 55.6 percent (2.5 billion manats / $1.5 billion) more than in the same period of 2020.
