Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov stressed 'special character' of the inter-state cooperation on the eve of the Ukraine President Victor Yushchenko's official visit to Turkmenistan scheduled on September 14-17, 2009.

Berdimuhamedov stressed importance of the upcoming top-level talks and special character of the Turkmen-Ukrainian cooperation a number of joint projects are successfully implemented within these talks in Turkmenistan, national TV channel Turkmenistan-4 said.

According to the schedule of the visit, Yushchenko will take part in the opening of the railway, as well as laying the foundation of the automobile bridge across the Amu Darya. Berdimuhamedov instructed the Turkmen Foreign Ministry to work over the program of the Ukrainian leader's visit and to invite distinguished guest to take part in laying another important facility - a cement plant in Koitendag region of Lebap district.

In its turn, the main purpose of the Ukraine President's visit is to give new impetus to the development of bilateral political dialogue and to discuss new joint projects of the countries' cooperation. "First and foremost, it will deal with resumption of direct deliveries of Turkmen gas to Ukraine and cooperation in trade-economic and military-technical sphere, the official website of the Ukrainian President said.

It is noteworthy that Yushchenko told about Ukrainian strive to have direct relations in the gas sector with Turkmenistan without mediators during his first meeting with Berdimuhamedov, when he participated in the ceremony of Turkmen president's inauguration on February 14, 2007. "Ukrainian companies have experience in the fuel and energy complex and can be involved in the process of these plans realization in Turkmenistan", the Ukrainian leader said.

Ukrainian economic facilities are being involved in construction of investment facilities of national importance in Turkmenistan and complex engineering communications, compressor stations and others.

Turkmenistan is one of key players on the energy market of the Caspian region. Need in further development of bilateral partnership is connected with need in expansion of Ukrainian economic presence in the Central Asian region and ensuring the country's needs in hydrocarbons, the website of the Ukrainian Embassy to Turkmenistan said.

Diplomatic relations between Ukraine and Turkmenistan were established on October 10, 1992. The legal base consists of 95 inter-state, inter-governmental, inter-departmental and inter-regional documents.

Important documents include: the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation between Ukraine and Turkmenistan, Inter-state program of long-term economic cooperation over 2001-2010 and the Joint decree of two presidents on construction and financing of special important investment facilities of national importance in Turkmenistan.

Import-export from Ukraine to Turkmenistan (according to the State Customs Service of Ukraine) in 2008 include production of metallurgical complex - 59.5 percent (total sum of supply $243,713 million), mechanical engineering - 14,4 percent ($59 million 10,000) ; food - 10.7 percent (the total sum of supply - $43 million 648,000), chemical products - 4.1 percent ($16 million 767,000); goods from stone, gypsum and cement - 0.6 percent ($2 million 350,000); energy resources -0.5 percent ($2 million 190,000), wood, paper and cellulose - 0,4 percent ($1 million 838,000); products of light industry - 0.3 percent ($1 million 181,000), other products - 1 percent ($4 million 170,000).

Export of goods from Turkmenistan to Ukraine includes gases, oil and other hydrocarbons in a gaseous state - 99.7 percent ($3 billion 746 million 547,000), oil or oil products, polymers of propylene and olifen - 0,1 percent ($5 million 244,000); products of light industry - 0.1 percent ($2 million 571,000), other products - 0.1 percent.
